<PERSONAL BRANDING>

There is only one thing in life worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about.

—OSCAR WILDE

This is the high-class problem chapter—also known as “I have a job, so how do I turn it into a career?” Personal branding is definitely atop the hierarchy of human needs. If you’re worried about feeding yourself and paying the bills, it’s fine to focus on getting the job first before grappling with how you’re being seen on social media. If you have student loans and you have a job offer with a very staid and buttoned-up company that disapproves of gamers or goths or potheads or women with body hair, just take it. Feed and house yourself first, then worry about your image and whether you’re in the right job. That being said, this is a serious issue during your mid-career, when you have some career stability and are now working on your long-term goals. If you’ve found yourself in a dead-end job with no promotion in sight, it’s time to change your perspective. It’s no longer just about your skill set; it’s about your network, your image, and your personal brand.

I’m going to talk about three things in this chapter: being genuine, being findable, and being bold. At the end of this chapter, you’ll know why it’s better to have some people not like you than to have no one know you.
